The Parliament’s Government Oversight Committee voted to approve President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s Cabinet, today.
The decision, which had been delayed for weeks at the committee stage, took place in a meeting held this morning following the Parliament’s recess.
This marked the first time for the Parliament to go into recess without finalising the approval of a new Cabinet. During the meeting attended by 10 members, Thimarafushi MP Abdulla Riyaz proposed voting in approval of all 22 Cabinet ministers as one, a motion seconded by Central Hithadhoo MP Ahmed Rasheed.
With five pro-government MPs voting in favor of the motion, MDP lawmakers chose to abstain. Committee chair Ibrahim Falah announced the motion’s passage with a majority vote.
Muizzu formally requested the Cabinet’s approval on November 20, two days after the new administration assumed office.
The Parliament’s initial vote on the Cabinet, scheduled for December 18, was delayed when the committee sent the original report back for being incomplete and lacking approval for government ministries’ mandates.
