The Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) Parliamentary Group (PG) has asserted its commitment to maintaining a majority in the Parliament, ensuring that no additional members will defect from the party.

Following the departure of 13 MPs from the MDP to join the ruling PNC party on Thursday, the MDP prosecution group convened a press conference at the parliamentary office today.

During the press conference, Hulhumale’ MP Ali Ali Niyaz stated that despite the loss of 13 members, the party still commands a majority with 43 MPs. He expressed confidence that the MDP would take all necessary measures to retain its members.

Highlighting that the 18 members present at the press conference represent only a portion of the party, Niyaz clarified that some members were unable to attend due to being overseas for holidays.

Niyaz emphasised that the members who departed the MDP maintain close ties with the party and are actively engaged in ongoing discussions.
