During a press conference, Principal Secretary to the President Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim announced the government’s decision to reintegrate retired health professionals into the workforce. The initiative targets individuals in good health possessing the requisite qualifications, offering them employment opportunities on a contractual basis should they express interest.

Furthermore, Ibrahim disclosed that the Ministry of Health will spearhead the efforts to facilitate the return of retired health workers. Collaborating with relevant authorities, the government aims to extend similar policies to other sectors by the conclusion of the President’s initial 14 weeks in office.

The Principal Secretary emphasised that a survey indicated a willingness among retired health workers, particularly nurses, to commit to as little as four hours of work. This revelation prompted the introduction of a special scheme, allowing individuals who had left the health sector for various reasons to re-enter the workforce.

Notably, the Civil Service Commission’s policies will be revised to accommodate those opting for less than eight hours of work, marking a significant stride towards enhancing the expertise and capability of the health sector’s workforce. Ibrahim underscored the importance of this initiative in bolstering the ranks of Maldivians across critical sectors.
