Expats to Provide Medical Reports for Work Permits Starting Today

MV+ News Desk | January 4, 2024

Expatriates seeking work permits in the Maldives will be required to submit a medical report from a health facility registered with the Homeland Security Ministry, starting today.

This decision was announced by the ministry yesterday, marking a reinstatement of the practice that was temporarily suspended during COVID-19 easements.

Under the new regulations, foreign citizens entering the Maldives on work permits must submit their medical reports through the Xpat system. The reports are essential for both the issuance and extension of work permits.

Expatriates entering the country on a work permit entry pass must ensure that their medical report is submitted within 15 days of arrival. Additionally, those with expired work permits abroad must obtain a medical report from a foreign service provider, including all tests mandated by the Maldives’ Ministry of Health. This report should be submitted via the Xpat system for a temporary 15-day approval.

Upon returning to the Maldives, individuals with expired work permits are obligated to submit a new medical report from within the country within 15 days of arrival. This new report ensures a full one-year work permit medical validity.

Expatriates who originally received work permits without medical requirements are also subject to the new regulations and must submit their medical reports via the Xpat system today.

The Ministry of Homeland Security has issued a warning that non-compliance with these requirements will result in actions in accordance with the Regulation on Expatriate Employment.

Expatriates leaving the Maldives with an expired work permit and without a valid work permit medical report after February 4 will face a fine of MVR 2,000 for each year the medical report is invalid, calculated per work permit fee cycle year.
