The government has initiated a program to address the clogged drains in Male’ City, in response to the extensive flooding experienced last week.
The initiative, launched by Local Government Minister Adam Shareef Umar, aims to prevent future flooding incidents by clearing the city’s drainage systems.
The program, a collaborative effort between the Local Government Ministry, Male’ City Council, Health Protection Agency (HPA), and Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO), commenced with a ceremony on Saturday morning. Minister Adam Shareef, accompanied by Male’ City Deputy Mayor Ahmed Nareesh and other council and government officials, actively participated in the cleanup efforts.
While the initial program is scheduled for one week, the Local Government Ministry has stated that Male’ City Council will continue ongoing efforts to maintain clean and efficient drainage systems beyond this period.
The decision to address the clogged drains follows torrential rain that hit Male’ City last Sunday, leading to widespread flooding. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) received 180 reports of flood damage, with 164 homes affected. Temporary shelters were provided for dozens of individuals displaced by the flooding.
The cleanup program reflects the government’s commitment to mitigating the impact of adverse weather conditions and ensuring the safety and well-being of Male’ City residents. Authorities encourage the public to remain vigilant and report any drainage issues to the relevant authorities for prompt resolution.
