Environmental advocacy organisation Ecocare Maldives has voiced apprehension regarding an eco-tourism development initiative on HDh. Keylakunu.
The government’s announcement of plans to develop Keylakunu for eco-tourism has sparked discussions within the Economic Council. In response, Ecocare Maldives took to ‘X’ today to emphasise the importance of preserving Keylakunu as a national heritage island.
In a tweet, the organisation reiterated its stance, highlighting Keylakunu as the only island in the North Maldives classified as a forest and expressing concern over its opening for tourism development. The island is renowned for its significant biodiversity.
The move to develop Keylakunu for eco-tourism aligns with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s previous commitment.
Ecocare Maldives is a non-governmental, non-profit making organisation based in the Maldives to educate, advocate, protect and sustain the environment.
