The Maldives Democratic Party (MDP), the main opposition political party, has raised concerns over President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s failure to deliver the flat registry within the promised two weeks of assuming office.
Muizzu announced on the 2nd of this month that ownership papers would be handed over by the week’s end to individuals listed as recipients of flats and land under the Binveriya and Gedhoruveriya scheme from the recent MDP government.
However, on the last working day of the week, the MDP issued a statement expressing its unease with the situation. The party highlighted that no efforts had been made by the government to transfer the flats thus far. Additionally, concerns were raised about the lack of response to complaints submitted to relevant institutions.
The statement conveyed the public’s apprehension, noting that President Dr Muizzu had spoken about flats in various ways since taking office, contrary to promises made during the presidential election campaign.
The MDP urged the immediate commencement of the process to hand over allotted plots and flats to beneficiaries of the previous government’s Binveriya and Gedhoruveriya Scheme.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has intervened in the matter, ordering the suspension of all activities related to flat handovers.
