The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), the opposition party, has officially announced the date for its primary to select candidates for the upcoming parliamentary election scheduled for February 3rd.
The party disclosed the constituencies earmarked for the primary, along with the list of candidates who submitted applications within the stipulated time frame.
The application process for the primary was open from December 16th to December 25th, attracting a total of 36 candidates. In cases where only one candidate applied for a particular constituency, they were automatically granted the party’s ticket, as there were no competing applicants.
MDP had previously declared its intention to conduct the primary this month, gearing up for the parliamentary election set for March 17th.
During the current 19th parliamentary term, MDP secured a supermajority, marking their strongest performance to date. Following the party’s setback in the presidential election held in September, MDP recognises the importance of securing a significant number of seats in the parliamentary election to maintain its political influence.
