Dr. Mohamed Ali confirmed yesterday the death of a 30-year-old Maldivian within the past 30 days due to H1N1 complications, with three other youths now on ventilator support.
In a statement posted on X, Dr. Mohamed Ali noted the recent circulation of H1N1 in the Maldives over the past few weeks. He clarified that the deceased individual succumbed to the virus, while the three others are undergoing treatment on ventilator support due to pneumonia.
Despite the concerning situation, Dr. Mohamed Ali reassured the public that the current scenario is unlikely to escalate into a pandemic. He further outlined the symptoms of H1N1, emphasizing their similarity to those of a common cold.
Highlighting the contagious nature of the virus, he mentioned that individuals with H1N1 are likely to spread it approximately two days before symptoms manifest, and there remains a high risk of transmission even after symptoms become evident.
Addressing the importance of vaccination, Dr. Mohamed Ali emphasized the lower percentage of people vaccinated against the virus, urging the public to get influenza vaccinations promptly. Expressing optimism, he hoped that seasonal vaccines would be covered under Aasandha, the national health insurance scheme.
The current rainy weather in the Maldives has contributed to an increase in mosquito-borne diseases, prompting continuous cautionary advisories from health authorities. The public is urged to exercise vigilance amidst these health concerns.
