The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), the main opposition party with a parliamentary majority, has proposed a bill to prohibit national elections during the holy month of Ramadan.

Ihavandhoo MP Mohamed Shifau confirmed the submission of the amendment to the General Elections Act today following a meeting of the MDP parliamentary group the night before, where members expressed unanimous support for the proposed legislation.

The decision to present the bill coincides with the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for March 17, a date that falls within the first week of Ramadan. Concerns have been raised regarding the potential impact on voter turnout due to the religious observances during this period.

MP Mohamed Shifau emphasised the importance of holding elections with a high level of public participation, stating yesterday, “We do not accept an election that denies people the chance to get involved in.” The move to propose the bill aims to address these concerns.

Fuad Thaufeeq, chairman of the Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM), clarified that the decision to hold elections during Ramadan was necessitated by legal constraints.

The current parliamentary term expires on May 28, and according to the law, the ECM must initiate the electoral process 120 days before the term concludes. The ECM has consistently highlighted the need for legal amendments to avoid scheduling elections during Ramadan.
