The Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) has laid foundation stone to construct a new holding unit within Hulhumale’ Prison, during a ceremony presided over by Commissioner of Prisons Hassan Zareer.
The initiative, aimed at bolstering inmate services and living conditions, signifies a significant step in the ongoing development of the correctional facilities. The decision to establish the holding unit comes as part of a broader strategy to streamline the handling of prisoners and detainees, particularly those requiring temporary accommodation during transit to Male’ City for various legal proceedings.
Previously, transit prisoners and detainees were housed in Male’ Prison, which ceased operations on January 7, prompting the need for alternative arrangements. The introduction of the holding unit at Hulhumale’ Prison is envisioned to address this demand efficiently.
The initial phase of the project will see the construction of a 40-seat holding unit, with provisions in place for future expansion to accommodate up to 77 inmates. Construction is slated to be completed within the next four months, with meticulous attention paid to ensuring the facility meets the necessary standards and regulations.
