Tensions flared at several polling stations during the ruling PPM/PNC primary, particularly in the Henveyru stations, as voters gathered to cast their ballots for the parliamentary candidates.

Incidents of unrest were reported at the polling stations of Henveyru South and Henveyru Central constituencies, with a ballot box reportedly thrown amidst clashes. Police swiftly responded to the scene to diffuse the situation.

The problem seemed to stem from discrepancies in voter lists, with some individuals finding their names unexpectedly removed from the rolls at the eleventh hour. The PNC confirmed that polling had to be temporarily suspended at certain stations due to these issues.

However, despite the disturbances observed in the Male’ City, primary voting proceeded smoothly in rural areas, with no significant disruptions reported.

The voting process for the PPM/PNC’s parliamentary primary, aimed at selecting candidates for the upcoming March 17 parliamentary elections, commenced at 10:00 am local time.

The PPM disclosed that polling is underway across 73 constituencies, featuring 283 candidates vying for seats. The voting window spans from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, accommodating the electorate, estimated at 71,597 eligible voters.
