MFDA Bans Toblerone Chocolates Amid Plastic Contamination Concerns

MV+ News Desk | January 30, 2024

The Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) has banned the importation and retail of Toblerone Milk and Toblerone Milk Honey and Almond nougat chocolates following concerns of plastic contamination.

The move comes in response to alerts from both the World Health Organization’s International Food Safety Authority Network and Europe’s Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed, which highlighted the presence of plastic contamination in Toblerone chocolates reaching Maldivian shores.

According to reports, the contamination issue stems from a malfunction in the chocolate manufacturing process, leading to plastic particles infiltrating the product.

The MFDA has underscored the potential health risks associated with consuming the contaminated chocolates, including the danger of plastic ingestion leading to throat obstruction or dental damage.

As a precautionary measure, the MFDA has enforced a ban on the sale of Toblerone Milk Honey and Almond nougat chocolates, particularly those slated to expire on December 2 of this year.

Additionally, a specific batch of Toblerone milk chocolates produced on September 1 has also been prohibited from circulation. The regulatory authority’s swift action aims to mitigate any potential harm to consumers and maintain the integrity of the food supply chain in the Maldives.
