The Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare has revealed plans to introduce agriculture as a separate subject within the school curriculum across the Maldives.
Minister of State for Agriculture and Animal Welfare, Hussain Ismail, told Mihaaru media that the discussions are currently underway with the Ministry of Education to integrate agriculture into the syllabus as a separate subject.
“We are presently engaged in discussions with the Ministry of Education to introduce agriculture as an independent subject. Our aim is to implement this initiative within the current academic year,” stated Minister Hussain.
The specific grade level at which agriculture will be incorporated into the curriculum has yet to be finalised.
While the Ministry has not officially sanctioned agriculture as a standalone subject, several educational institutions have already initiated teaching programmes in this field. Notably, certain schools have adopted practical approaches, cultivating various crops within their premises to cultivate students’ interest in agriculture.
Techniques such as hydroponics, including the cultivation of crops like lettuce in water, and aquaponics, which integrates farming with crop cultivation, are being employed in some institutions.
