India to Withdraw Troops from Maldives by May 10th
The government announced last evening that the Indian government has consented to withdraw Indian military personnel from the Maldives before May 10th.
Previously, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu had formally requested India to withdraw its military personnel by March 15th. Following this, discussions between both nations have been ongoing.
The second meeting of the High-Level Core Group between the Maldives and India occurred on Friday in India’s capital, New Delhi.
The Maldivian Foreign Ministry commented on the meeting, stating that both sides had agreed during today’s meeting that the Indian government would replace military personnel in one of the three aviation platforms by March 10th. Furthermore, they would complete replacing military personnel in the other two platforms by May 10th.
The Ministry added that both parties also assessed the existing bilateral cooperation, focusing on improving and enhancing partnerships in defence and security cooperation, as well as economic and developmental partnerships.
According to the Maldivian government, there are currently 88 Indian military personnel in the Maldives responsible for the operation and maintenance of helicopters and Dornier aircraft donated by the Indian government.
