Minister Khaleel outlined the government’s commitment to kickstart the construction of the hospital within the current year, underscoring its significance in enhancing thalassemia care nationwide upon its completion.

Addressing the pressing issue of a growing thalassemia population attributed to an increase in carrier marriages, the minister stressed the necessity for specialised care and psychological support for affected individuals, alongside the establishment of a robust blood bank facility.

In a bid to foster community integration, Minister Khaleel emphasised the inclusion of amenities such as a library and recreational areas within the hospital premises, as well as accommodations for patients traveling from distant islands for treatment in Male’.

With Hulhumale housing a substantial population of 30,000-40,000 residents and currently being served by Treetop Hospital and Hulhumale’ Hospital, both of which require redevelopment, the necessity for an upgraded healthcare facility in Phase 2 becomes evident. The forthcoming hospital, while specialising in thalassemia care, will also extend general medical services to cater to diverse healthcare needs.

Aligned with the broader objectives of the Health Ministry’s national campaign, the initiative aims to screen the entire Maldivian population for thalassemia within a five-year timeframe, with a subsequent goal of reducing transfusion-dependent thalassemia cases by 50 percent within the next decade.
