The Parliament Speaker Mohamed Aslam and Deputy Speaker Ahmed Saleem have received notice of no-confidence motions filed against them by the ruling PPM-PNC coalition.

The catalyst for these motions stemmed from the discord that unfolded within the parliament following the main opposition MDP’s decision to withhold approval for certain cabinet ministers last Sunday.

Confirming the development, Hassan Ziyau, the Communications Director of the Parliament Secretariat, informed Sun that both the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker had been formally served notice regarding the impending no-confidence motions.

Scheduled for deliberation on February 19th, the motions against both individuals are set to feature prominently on the agenda of the upcoming parliamentary sitting.

The no-confidence motion brought forward by the PPM-PNC coalition alleges Speaker Aslam’s misuse of his official capacity to favour specific party interests. Moreover, the coalition contends that Speaker Aslam initially returned the Parliament’s Government Oversight Committee’s report on cabinet approval, contravening parliamentary regulations.

Signed by 23 MPs, including representatives from MDA, MNP, and independent MP Mohamed Nasheed Abdulla, the motion highlights the gravity of the discontent within the parliamentary ranks.

The commencement of the 19th parliament’s final session is slated for Monday, with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu set to deliver his inaugural presidential address during the first sitting.

A no-confidence motion carries significant weight, as it effectively halts further parliamentary proceedings until a decision is reached on the motion’s outcome.

It is noteworthy that Speaker Aslam assumed office following the resignation of former Speaker Mohamed Nasheed, whose own no-confidence motion was deemed to have been unlawfully obstructed by the Supreme Court.
