President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to enhance essential services on all islands with a focus on water, sewerage, and port facilities, before the end of the current term.

During his Presidential Address, Muizzu addressed the pressing need for infrastructure development in rural areas, highlighting the lack of progress in previous projects. He pledged to prioritize the completion of these projects in response to the demands of the populace.

Additionally, Dr Muizzu outlined plans for the improvement of roads in urban centres and major towns, with construction set to commence in Male’ city later this year.

Muizzu affirmed that the majority of the project’s funding would be provided through aid from China, emphasising the commitment to enhancing the quality of electricity services across all islands.

Furthermore, the introduction of the ‘My Solar’ program aims to reduce household electricity costs, promote renewable energy generation, and deliver socio-economic benefits to citizens. The initial phase of the program has already commenced, with tenders open for the purchase of solar PV systems.

Notably, previous efforts by the government in 2021 to install water and sewerage facilities faced delays, resulting in incomplete coverage across the islands.
