Muizzu Vows to Halt Senior Political Appointments
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has declared his intention to halt further appointments to senior political positions, as revealed during his inaugural presidential address at the commencement of the final session of the ongoing 19th parliament this morning.
Covering a range of significant subjects in his address, President Muizzu particularly underscored the state of the Maldivian economy, highlighting the imperative need to curtail state expenditure given the prevailing economic conditions.
Consequently, he announced his resolve to abstain from additional appointments to senior political roles within the government, except in cases deemed essential.
“In this context, I declare my decision to refrain from further appointments to senior political positions, barring exceptional circumstances, to mitigate state expenditure,” he stated.
This commitment aligns with Muizzu’s electoral promise to limit political appointments in his administration to 700 individuals.
However, since assuming office on November 17, a total of 91 state ministers and 163 deputy ministers have been appointed thus far. Additionally, a senior minister has been appointed, alongside 20 individuals at the ministerial level, augmenting the 22 existing cabinet ministers.
