President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has sought Parliament’s approval for three ministers who were reinstated to his cabinet following their rejection by the legislative body.
In an extraordinary session held on January 29, the Parliament conducted a long-awaited vote on cabinet approval. While 19 ministers were endorsed, three were turned down: Housing Minister Dr. Ali Haidar Ahmed, Islamic Minister Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, and Attorney General Ahmed Usham.
The rejection came after the MDP, holding a majority in Parliament, issued a three-line red whip the day prior, aiming to dismiss the aforementioned ministers along with Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed, who narrowly retained his position.
Promptly following the vote, President Muizzu reinstated the three ministers to their positions.
According to Hassan Ziyau, the Parliament’s communications director, the President’s Office submitted the request for approval for the three ministers on Tuesday. However, Ziyau noted that Parliament has yet to determine its course of action.
The MDP has raised doubts regarding the legitimacy of the ministers’ reinstatement and remains firm in its stance against endorsing them. Accusations have been levelled against the government, alleging contempt towards Parliament with its decision.
