President Muizzu Addresses Developmental Concerns During Kolhumadulu Atoll Visit

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, during his three-day presidential tour of Kolhumadulu Atoll, has addressed developmental concerns with local island councils and women’s development committees (WDC) of Dhiyamigili Island, Vilufushi Island and Veymandoo Island. 

Accompanied by a delegation of high-level government officials, President Muizzu convened meetings yesterday with the Island Council and WDC’s of Dhiyamigili, Vilufushi, and Veymandoo Islands.

In Dhiyamigili Island, discussions centred on the island’s developmental requirements, including the urgent need for connectivity with neighbouring islands. Council members stressed the importance of a causeway linking Dhiyamigili with Madifushi, along with land reclamation to connect Dhiyamigili and Medhufushi. Other key topics included the incorporation of Mathidhoo into the council’s jurisdiction, establishment of an MNDF post, installation of an ATM, and extension of the Health Centre.

The meeting also shed light on the challenges faced by residents due to incomplete projects and inadequate infrastructure. According to a press release published by the President’s Office yesterday, President Muizzu assured council members of prompt action, promising to expedite projects such as road construction and address budgetary constraints raised by the WDC. 

In Vilufushi Island, council members also highlighted concerns regarding stalled development projects, notably the hospital and airport development initiatives. The council further stressed the importance of fisheries expansion, tourism development, and support for families affected by natural disasters.

President Muizzu affirmed the administration’s commitment to implementing crucial projects and providing essential services to address housing issues and support affected families. The President’s Office revealed that the president pledged close collaboration between relevant government ministries and offices to expedite solutions.

Issues raised in Veymandhoo Island included the lack of sports facilities, space constraints at the harbour, halted construction of the police station, waste management challenges, and the need for an ice plant to aid local fishermen.The Veymandhoo WDC further highlighted concerns regarding the absence of a children’s park, limited sports facilities for women, and budget constraints. The President’s Office states that President Muizzu assured comprehensive support from government ministries to address these issues effectively.
