The Election Commission of Maldives (ECM) has issued a reminder that there are only four days remaining for potential candidates to contest the upcoming parliamentary election.
This comes after 12 days have passed since the ECM made the nomination process public.
The ECM has stated that there will be no extension granted beyond the current deadline. The final date for the submission of applications is set for Wednesday, February 14, at 2:00 p.m. Additionally, to accommodate potential candidates, the ECM will be accepting applications on Saturdays and public holidays from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
As of now, the ECM has received a total of 18 application forms. Notably, yesterday, two forms were submitted by a candidate from the PPM-PNC, along with two from private individuals. All three proposals have been accepted by the ECM.
For independent candidates, submission requirements include providing clear copies of both sides of their identity cards, accompanied by signatures from at least 50 supporters. Moreover, individuals with outstanding debts are required to furnish evidence of ongoing debt repayment. The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has urged banks to facilitate the process of opening accounts to alleviate any potential difficulties.
The ECM advises potential candidates against delaying their application submissions until the last minute, as this may impede the opportunity to rectify any issues that may arise with their forms.
