The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has disclosed that there were 244 reported cases of dengue fever in April, marking a noticeable increase compared to other diseases which saw a decline during the same period.

Data provided by the agency indicates a surge in dengue fever cases in April compared to the preceding month of March 2024, with 119 new cases recorded during April.

In contrast, there was a considerable decrease in reported cases of common cold, with 22,739 cases reported in April, representing a decline of 10,898 cases compared to March figures.

Additionally, eight cases of influenza and 2,714 cases of diarrhoea were reported last month, both experiencing a decrease in comparison to March statistics.

The increase in mosquito-borne diseases is attributed to the onset of the wet season, leading to the accumulation of stagnant water in open containers. The HPA highlights a rise in cases of dengue fever and chikungunya.

In response to the concerning trend, the agency has urged the public to adopt preventive measures against mosquitoes and mosquito bites. These measures include the application of mosquito repellents and anti-mosquito lotions, removal of stagnant water, and regular home cleaning.

Additionally, the HPA recommends keeping doors and windows closed during dawn and dusk, when mosquito activity is highest.
