Initial Group of Government-Sponsored Hajj Pilgrims Begins
The initial group of 50 individuals has embarked on this year’s Hajj pilgrimage, marking the commencement of this commitment, as part of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s pledge to sponsor Hajj for 1,000 people below the poverty line within the next five years.
Muizzu’s pledge to sponsor Hajj for 1,000 people below the poverty line within the next five years was made on August 18, 2023, while addressing the residential community of Mulaku Island in Meemu Atoll during the first round of the presidential election campaign.
Muizzu previously announced the Cabinet’s endorsement of executing the pledge for the first Hajj season during his presidential term.
This announcement was made while meeting the press following the Cabinet meeting held on December 5, 2023, just three weeks after assuming office.
