Theft Dominates Crime Stats with Over 2K Cases So Far This Year 

The Maldives Police Services statistics reveal that theft is the most prevalent crime this year, with 2,152 reported cases.

In comparison, traffic accidents have been reported 1,674 times, while drug-related crimes account for 960 cases. There have been 616 cases of lost items and 417 instances of embezzlement.

Vandalism has been reported 412 times, and there have been 397 cases of assault. Other types of crime account for 718 cases.

Examining the theft statistics over the years, there has been significant fluctuation. In 2018, there were 3,282 cases of theft, which increased to 4,547 in 2019. 

However, 2020 saw a decrease to 3,578 cases. The number rose again in 2021, reaching 4,678, before dropping to 3,978 in 2022. Last year, in 2023, the number of theft cases was 3,819.
