Gov’t Reaches Settlement with Bereaved Parents Over Hospital Negligence

MV+ News Desk | August 6, 2024

The state has reached a settlement agreement with the bereaved parents of a baby who passed away due to negligence at the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).

The settlement includes an undisclosed amount of compensation. The case was initially filed with the Civil Court last year, where IGMH admitted that the baby’s death resulted from their negligence. The parents sought compensation for their loss.

This week, the court announced that both parties had reached an out-of-court settlement. Consequently, the lawsuit has been dropped, and the case is now closed.

An official from the Attorney General’s Office commented on the matter, stating that the family pursued legal action to seek compensation following their child’s death. The state opted for an out-of-court settlement to save time, acknowledging the gravity of the situation.

The official noted that the settlement amount was lower than the family’s original claim, confirming it was less than MVR five million. The agreement includes a non-disclosure clause requested by the parents, preventing the exact amount from being made public.
