The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has passed a resolution calling for direct action against what it describes as the unfair dismissal of a significant number of employees.

MDP criticised the government for dismissing employees without appropriate safeguards or justice. The resolution asserts that the MDP should take direct action to advocate for those who are dismissed without proper oversight.

MDP Chairman Fayyaz Ismail addressed the resolution, expressing concern over each individual affected by these dismissals. He stated that the party would not hesitate to protest against the current wave of layoffs if necessary.

In addition to the resolution, the MDP National Assembly approved the establishment of a committee to investigate the dismissals.

Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail announced that future council meetings would occur weekly during the day. He emphasised that it is crucial for the MDP to undertake tasks that the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) majority in parliament has not addressed, making weekly meetings with representatives from all constituencies essential.

Fayyaz highlighted the need for the MDP to advocate strongly against the dismissals, particularly given the rising cost of goods.

The resolution passed during the National Council meeting also includes the formation of a five-member team to lead the effort to seek justice for those dismissed from government positions. The committee will include MDP Vice President Hisaan Hussain, Legal Director Mahfooz Saeed, Kendhoo constituency MP Mauroof Zakir, Alifushi constituency MDP President Mohamed Rasheed Hassan (Bigey), and Kudahuvadhoo constituency MDP President Shathir Abdul Rahman.

The resolution was unanimously approved by all attendees at the meeting, who stressed the need for the MDP to enhance its efforts to hold the government accountable, given the current risky trajectory of national affairs. Fayyaz reiterated that the MDP has given the government ample time and opportunity to reform its practices.
