The Food Safety Act, which was approved by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on May 23, 2013, is scheduled to come into effect on August 23. This legislation introduces stringent regulations designed to improve the safety of food imports and exports.

At the press conference, Dr. Khaleel underscored his commitment to safeguarding the public’s food supply. He highlighted that transitional regulations for the registration of food service establishments, as outlined in the Food Safety Act, will be published in the Government Gazette on August 23.

The Act sets out comprehensive standards and procedures for the registration, licensing, and regulation of food preparation, import, export, sales, and service establishments, and includes penalties for violations that pose public health risks.

The Minister drew attention to the penalties for non-compliance, which range from USD 648 to USD 3,200. Foreign manufacturers in breach of the Act could face deportation and additional legal action. Dr. Khaleel acknowledged current difficulties in tracking food producers and sellers, which often require a court order to address. However, he assured that the new legislation would rectify these issues, facilitating the identification and accountability of those responsible for food safety breaches.

Additionally, Dr. Khaleel announced that food manufacturers, including online sellers, will be required to display a license number on product labels. This measure aims to simplify the identification of the individuals or locations responsible for food products. He also addressed the current challenges in reporting food safety concerns and promised the establishment of a dedicated hotline to make it easier for the public to report issues. The Minister encouraged active public participation to ensure the safety and quality of the food supply.
