Gov’t Meets Island Councils to Strengthen Waste Management Efforts

Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim met with Island Council staff from Zones 4 and 5 at the Green Building this morning to discuss preparations for a technical training programme focused on improving waste management systems.

Deputy Ministers, the Director General of the Waste Department, and other senior officials were also in attendance.

A total of 14 participants from seven islands, including Faafu Magoodhoo, Faafu Nilandhoo, Meemu Kolhufushi, Meemu Mulah, Meemu Muli, Thaa Kinbidhoo, and Thaa Thimarafushi, will travel to New Delhi, India, for the training, which will take place from 27 to 30 August 2024. 

The programme, developed in collaboration with the TERI School of Advanced Studies, will consist of classroom sessions and field visits to waste processing plants.

This initiative is part of the Maldives Clean Environment Project, which is supported by the World Bank. The project aims to strengthen the country’s waste management infrastructure, contributing to the broader goal of creating a cleaner and more sustainable environment.

The participants will gain insights into operationalising waste management systems, which is expected to have a positive impact on their respective communities.
