Minister of Foreign Affairs Moosa Zameer has announced the decision to join the United Nations’ International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to facilitate the acquisition of essential medication and equipment for the country’s upcoming cancer hospital.

At a press conference held yesterday at the President’s Office, Minister Zameer outlined the decision as part of the government’s efforts to support the hospital, which is a key initiative of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. The cancer hospital is seen as a critical development in the country’s healthcare system.

“The primary reason for joining the IAEA is to gain access to modern medical technology, including equipment procurement and waste management, which fall under the agency’s purview,” the minister said.

The Maldives and Bhutan are currently the only two countries in the region that have yet to become members of the 178-nation IAEA. Minister Zameer emphasised that membership would not only assist in the cancer hospital’s development but also open up opportunities for the Maldives in the field of atomic energy.

The next step involves submitting the Cabinet’s decision to Parliament for approval, after which the formal process of joining the IAEA will commence.

The development of the cancer hospital was initially a project under former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration. Originally planned for Laamu Atoll’s Gan Island under India’s line of credit, the hospital’s location was reconsidered due to concerns from medical professionals. The project was subsequently relocated to a site behind Dharumavantha Hospital in Malé, while a mental health facility will now be constructed in Gan.

In February, the government announced a call for parties to conduct a feasibility study for the new hospital site.
