President Mohamed Muizzu has said that the 2026 state budget will prioritise building a fairer social protection system, implemented in collaboration with local councils.

Speaking to residents of Lhaviyani Atoll, Olhuvelifushi, the President assured that the budget will include funding for the island’s ongoing and newly inaugurated projects, as well as other pledged development initiatives.

He explained that following the dissolution of Atoll Councils through a legislative amendment, surplus funds will be redirected to Island Councils. These councils, he said, will use their budgets to directly assist citizens requiring social support. Muizzu noted that the administration places equal importance on social protection and island development, with results expected to become evident next year.

Addressing local priorities, the President identified the stabilisation of Olhuvelifushi’s power grid as the island’s most urgent issue. He said the successful execution of many planned projects depends on resolving the matter and pledged that the President’s Office will work closely with Fenaka to achieve a complete solution before Ramadan next year.

He also highlighted the harbour development project as a key initiative and announced that an additional 15 hectares of land will be reclaimed for the island. During his visit, the President attended the signing and inauguration of several development projects.
