President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the 300 three-bedroom housing units planned for development in Villimalé will be reserved exclusively for residents of the island.
He made the announcement during a consultative meeting with the Villimalé community, held as part of his ongoing efforts to engage directly with citizens and gather public input on major policy decisions. The President confirmed that construction of the units, which form part of the wider Greater Malé housing programme, will begin this year.
“Just now, Minister Muththalib mentioned 300 housing units. That is included in the 3,000 housing units to be developed in Malé City. From that, 300 housing units are being developed here [Villimalé]. These 300 housing units are allocated for residents of Villimalé. Therefore, I just wanted to mention that to you,” he said.

He added that Villimalé residents will also be eligible for the newly announced land scheme, with applications for both schemes opening on 4 January 2026.
The President also outlined plans to modernise Villimalé’s roads, noting that the project will proceed alongside upgrades to electricity, water and sewerage services. He further announced that construction of a multi-sports complex will begin next year, and that a US dollar ATM will be installed on the island.
On healthcare, he highlighted ongoing work to upgrade Vilimale Hospital to a tertiary facility. As operations shift to accommodate the upgrade, he said the Administration will work with the Malé City Group of Hospitals to minimise service disruptions, stressing the importance of public cooperation during the transition.
According to the President’s Office, Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Dr Abdulla Muththalib provided additional technical details on the bridge, road development and housing projects. He reiterated that preserving Villimalé’s natural greenery will remain a central priority and noted that there are no plans to permit motorised vehicles on the island even after the bridge is completed.
During the meeting, an agreement was signed to redevelop the site of Masjid Al-Salaam into a modern mosque.
Residents also raised concerns about two ageing trees causing inconvenience. Responding to the request, the President instructed that the trees be removed.
Concluding the session, President Muizzu said he does not believe Villimalé should be marginalised or overlooked, emphasising his commitment to addressing long-standing community concerns while advancing new development plans.
