55 Expatriates Detained Following Protests Over Upaid Wages Outside Muliaage

55 expatriate workers were detained on Saturday after staging a protest outside the presidential palace, Muliaage, in Male’ over unpaid wages. The workers, believed to be employed by an unclear group of companies, gathered to voice their frustration after allegedly not receiving their salaries.

A police spokesperson confirmed that officers responded to the protest, and the workers were subsequently escorted away from the area. The protest ended with 55 workers—38 from India and 17 from Bangladesh—taken into custody by Maldives Immigration.

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges expatriate workers face in the Maldives, including disputes over unpaid wages, poor living conditions, and workplace exploitation. It is not the first time such grievances have come to light, illustrating the need for systematic reforms to address the rights and welfare of foreign workers in the country.
