“5G Libey” : Ooredoo Maldives Expands 5G Coverage to 60% of Population
Ooredoo Maldives has announced that the posters that appeared across the streets of Malé and Hulhumalé, featuring the word “Libey” or “Available,” were part of a campaign promoting the telecommunication company’s 5G coverage expansion.
The posters had sparked widespread curiosity, with some believing the posters signaled the start of a new tourism promotion or campaign to boost international arrivals, while others thought they were part of a social awareness campaign focusing on issues such as environmental conservation or public health.
The company announced that its 5G services now reach 60 percent of the Maldives’ population, including residents of:
- Alif Alif Thoddoo and Rasdhoo
- Alif Dhaal Maamigili, Mahibadhoo, and Dhangethi
- Baa Eydhafushi
- Dhaalu Kudahuvadhoo
- Gaaf Alif Villingili and Gaaf Dhaal Thinadhoo
- Haa Alif Dhidhdhoo and Ihavandhoo
- Haa Dhaal Kulhudhuffushi
- Kaafu Guraidhoo and Maafushi
- Lhaviyani Hinnavaru and Naifaru
- Noonu Velidhoo
- Raa Dhuvaafaru and Ungoofaaru
- Seenu Hithadhoo
With this expansion, Ooredoo customers can now access enhanced 5G connectivity, supported by data centers connected directly to Singapore and Europe via submarine cables, bypassing India and Sri Lanka for the first time.
The Maldives and Singapore are linked through the PEACE cable which landed in Kulhudhuffushi this year and went Live on 1st August 20224. Ooredoo also operates tier 3 certified data centres in both Hulhumale’ and H.Dh. Kulhudhuffushi.
Ooredoo first began testing 5G services in the Maldives in 2019, and by the end of 2020, 5G was introduced to the Greater Malé Region.
