Police data shows that 77 percent of traffic accidents reported between 2 and 8 November occurred during daytime hours.
According to the Maldives Police Service, a total of 57 accidents were recorded in Malé, the Sinamalé Bridge, and the highway area during the week. Of these, 44 occurred in daylight and 13 at night.
The majority of incidents — 86 percent, or 49 cases — took place in Malé, while the remaining accidents were reported on the Bridge and highway.
Data indicates that collisions between motorcycles and cars were the most frequent type of accident, accounting for 16 cases. The second most common were collisions between two motorcycles, totalling 13 incidents. Police also recorded four hit-and-run cases during the same period.
No major accidents or serious injuries were reported last week. However, a collision between two motorcycles in Hulhumalé Phase II this week Monday resulted in the death of a 19 year old man. Three other individuals were also injured during the accident. Police said that the 19 year old, identified as Ismail Rayan Bin Nazim, died from severe head injuries while receiving treatment.
The high rate of daytime accidents highlights the growing problem of overcrowded roads in the capital, where traffic congestion and limited enforcement of road rules contribute to frequent collisions.
