A total of 99 tonnes of cargo were exported in February through the sea-to-air cargo service, equivalent to 20 TEUs, according to official statistics.

Sea-to-air cargo involves transporting goods to the Maldives by sea before sending them onward to international destinations by air. The service was launched on 15 May 2024 and is jointly operated by Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) and Maldives Ports Limited (MPL).

Statistics released by MPL showed that cargo shipments in February were carried by several international airlines. These included Qatar Airways, Etihad Airways, Lufthansa, Swiss Airline, Turkish Airline and Virgin Atlantic.

The service is currently connected to more than 17 airlines through the joint collaboration between MPL and MACL.

Authorities have noted that the sea-to-air cargo service is expanding rapidly and has already generated millions of dollars for the Maldivian economy.

With the Maldives maintaining a wide network of international airline connections, officials believe the country has significant potential to further develop and expand the service.
