Aasandha Reaffirms Coverage of Medicines Under Universal Health Insurance
Aasandha Company Limited, the Maldives’ national health insurance provider, has assured the public that all medications previously included under the universal health insurance scheme will continue to be covered.
The statement comes in response to growing concerns about the availability of certain medicines and their insurance coverage.

In a public announcement, Aasandha confirmed that the list of covered medications remains unchanged and can be accessed via the company’s official website. The provider further emphasised that there will be no additional charges for medicines imported through this year’s bulk procurement process.
The company also clarified that any medications not covered under the scheme will be explicitly marked as “not covered” on prescriptions. Aasandha urged citizens to report instances of pharmacies charging for medications that are insured under the programme.
The government is implementing significant reforms to enhance the effectiveness and sustainability of the universal health insurance scheme. As part of these reforms, price adjustments have been introduced for 250 high-cost medications, and steps are being taken to minimise waste within the system.
Aasandha’s annual expenditure amounts to over USD 194.6 million, with the bulk of this allocated to purchasing medicines. To manage costs and ensure the provision of high-quality medications, the government is increasingly relying on bulk procurement initiatives.
These measures aim to strengthen the nation’s health insurance system while maintaining equitable access to essential medicines for all citizens.
