Parliament Speaker and People’s National Congress (PNC) Chairperson Abdul Raheem Abdulla has raised questions about former President Abdulla Yameen’s financial status.
He highlighted a discrepancy between Yameen’s financial standing at the end of his presidency, with over MVR 500 million in his accounts, and his situation when he first assumed office in 2013, when he reportedly had less than MVR 100,000.
Abdul Raheem emphasised that his comments were intended to caution against provocative actions, stating, “Do not attempt to throw stones at a beehive.”
While expressing respect for Yameen, Abdul Raheem expressed disappointment that the former president has yet to grasp the realities of the situation. He also suggested that Yameen’s departure from President Muizzu’s side was motivated by an inability to accept another person assuming the presidency.
He also asserted that the current administration under President Muizzu will aim to achieve twice the level of development seen during Yameen’s tenure.
In response to the criticisms from Yameen, who accused President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu of lacking the courage to investigate corruption cases and suggested that Abdul Raheem’s cases would be among the first to be examined if Muizzu were braver, Abdul Raheem called for the establishment of an independent committee to investigate these matters.
