About 44% of Eligible Voters Do Not Belong to Any Political Party

In a demographic release by Ismail Habeeb, the Vice Chairman of the Elections Commission, today, it has been revealed that 44% of voters in the Maldives do not align themselves with any political party. 

According to the statistics presented, the Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) leads with a substantial 20% of eligible voters being registered with the party. Following behind is the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), with 13.7% of voters aligning with their platform.

The Jumhooree Party (JP) secures 8% of the vote share, while the Maldives Developmental Alliance (MDA) follows at 3.7%. The Adhaalath Party (AD) and the Maldives National Party (MNP) both share 3.5% of the voter base.

On the lower end of the spectrum, the Democrats (TD) hold 1.2% of the voter share, with the Maldives Third-Way Democrats (MTD) and the People’s National Congress (PNC) each claiming 1.1%.

The Maldives, with a population of 520,621, is preparing for upcoming second round of the presidential election with 282,804 eligible voters, on September 30, 2023.

Breaking down the population demographics, it’s notable that 41% of the population falls within the age group of 18-35 years. 59,535 people are males and 56,512 people are females in this age group.

Meanwhile, 50.8% of the population belongs to the age bracket of 36-65 years. 72,950 people are males and 70,659 people are females in this age group.

Finally, 8.2% of the population is aged 65 and above with 11,916 males and 11,223 females in this age group.
