Former Minister of State for Housing Akram Kamaaludeen stated that only 10 individuals barged into the Ministry to voice dissatisfaction for not getting flats under the Gedhoruveriya scheme and asserted that the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) cannot stop the flat allocation process.
During a committee session yesterday, Akram stated that a small number of dissatisfied individuals protested at the Housing Ministry. The discontented group voiced their dissatisfaction, prompting former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to permit the submission of complaints regarding the initial 4,000 flat recipients.
Despite receiving approximately 7,000 complaints, Akram highlighted that most were related to the duration of residency in the Male’ city. He clarified that the length of Male’ city residence is a criterion for flat eligibility, with no points awarded based on the duration of residence.
Akram disclosed that the ACC intervened after the completion of the draw on November 15, instructing the suspension of the 4,000 flats allocation. He recounted the sequence of events, noting that the draw proceeded live after discussions between flat committee members and the ACC deputy commissioner. The ACC’s directive to halt the flat allocation was received the following day.
Post-ACC intervention, Akram revealed that the Ministry was unable to provide documentation to the remaining 14,000 flat recipients. Despite challenges, he expressed doubt that the ACC possesses the authority to impede the allocation, citing legal opinions suggesting that while the ACC cannot prevent it, investigations can be pursued as per a Supreme Court decision.
