The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is currently investigating 161 cases outlined in the special audit released by the Auditor General’s Office (AGO) on Fenaka, and has informed the corporation to recover MVR 21 million as well.

The special audit, published on 25 September, revealed that a majority of contracts awarded by Fenaka Corporation between 2021 and 2023 were issued without competitive bidding, raising concerns over procurement practices and financial management at the state-owned utility provider.

In a press release today, the ACC said efforts are ongoing to investigate the concerns raised in the audit report and to determine which issues fall under its jurisdiction. The commission noted that several matters flagged in the audit had already been investigated previously.

According to the ACC, 161 cases are currently under investigation, with duty prosecution work initiated alongside the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) in 13 cases. The commission also instructed Fenaka to recover MVR 21,458,280.86 linked to corruption-related cases and to implement reforms across 96 areas. These include 49 management-related issues, 26 policy-related issues, 10 cases requiring recovery of funds lost to corruption, and eight other issues that Fenaka must further investigate.

The developments follow last week’s Criminal Court ruling, which sentenced former Fenaka Managing Director Ahmed Saeed to four years in prison after finding him guilty of corruption. He also faces charges in a separate case.

On Tuesday, Fenaka announced that it has already begun reforming its operations in line with the recommendations of the audit.
