The Minister of Housing, Land, and Urban Development, Dr Ali Haidar Ahmed revealed today that the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has conveyed their intention to complete the review into the ‘Gedhoruveriya’ housing scheme within the next 20 days.
He added that the Housing Ministry aims to recommence work on the scheme once the investigation concludes.
During a meeting with the Parliament’s National Development and Heritage Committee, Haidar explained that while the ACC anticipates concluding their investigation in the specified timeframe, any potential issues unveiled might extend the hiatus if a criminal investigation is deemed necessary.
Haidar mentioned the need to clarify the duration of a potential criminal investigation.
The Housing Ministry has received 7,000 complaints regarding the list of flat recipients under the ‘Gedhoruveriya’ scheme.
Haidar emphasised the current administration’s concern over the previous administration’s continuation of work on the scheme despite instructions from the ACC to halt the process and a request from the then President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to pause work during the transitional period.
The ACC requested full access to the Gedhoruverin portal, along with all applications and paperwork related to the scheme, and insisted that no one is authorised to amend information on the portal.
Haidar clarified to the committee that it was not the new administration that stopped the scheme but that the project had already been suspended at the ACC’s instructions when the new administration assumed office.
