The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has summoned Fayyaz Ismail, former Minister of Economic Development, for questioning in connection with an ongoing corruption investigation.

According to the summons, Fayyaz is being investigated over a decision made during his time on the Alternate Dispute Resolution Committee in 2019, in which he allegedly used his position to grant Swift Engineering Private Limited compensation exceeding the required amount for damages the company was owed. The ACC stated that this decision caused financial losses to the state and that the investigation seeks to determine whether Fayyaz owes any money to the government.

He has been instructed to appear before the ACC on 13 October at 9:30 a.m.

Responding to the summons, Fayyaz, who currently serves as Chairperson of the opposition party Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), said he has never acted in an official capacity that could harm the nation. However, he expressed doubt over the ACC’s ability to conduct a fair investigation.

“The past two years have been years in which [President] Muizzu has completely destroyed the country’s watchdog mechanisms,” Fayyaz said on X, adding that individuals in high positions were acting in line with the President’s wishes to secure their job safety.
