In the highly contested Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) MDP primary held yesterday to select candidates for the upcoming local council and women’s development committee (WDC) elections, incumbent Mayor of Malé, Adam Azim, won the party’s ticket.
Following the confirmation of Adam Azim’s ticket, his rival, former MP for the Central Henveiru constituency Ali Azim, called him and congratulated him and extended his best wishes, as seen by a video Ali Azim shared on his X account. Ali Azim also assured that he would fully support all efforts required to ensure victory in the upcoming election.
The primaries were held across several islands yesterday, with voting taking place from 2:30pm until 8:00pm.
The most competitive and high-profile contest in the MDP primaries was between Adam Azim and Ali Azim. During the campaign period, supporters from both sides exchanged strong verbal criticism against one another.
In yesterday’s MDP primary vote, 92 candidates contested from 25 islands for island council elections. In addition, 37 candidates contested in five city constituencies, bringing the total number of candidates to 129.
