The government has announced plans to establish a 30-megawatt power capacity in Addu City to address the city’s longstanding electricity challenges.
During his ongoing visit to Addu City, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu addressed residents of Hithadhoo, Maradhoo, Maradhoofeydhoo, and Feydhoo, providing updates on development projects planned and underway in the city. He stated that funding for all projects has already been secured and allocated.
The President highlighted that several projects have been awarded to private companies following proper procedures. He confirmed that work has commenced on projects that were carefully prepared and assured residents that these initiatives will be completed as planned.
Focusing on electricity as the city’s most pressing issue, President Muizzu noted that previous measures, including the delivery of eight generator sets, had not provided a sustainable solution. To address the problem, he announced a major project to establish 30 MW of electricity capacity. Administrative work has already begun, and project tenders will be awarded in the coming days. In addition to the installation of new capacity, existing generators and power plants will also be upgraded.
The President also addressed the city’s road infrastructure, describing poor road conditions as a significant obstacle to economic activity. He said that the road development project will proceed without being divided into additional phases, ensuring uninterrupted progress.
Under the government’s regional development policy, four southern atolls, including Addu City, will be integrated and developed as a dedicated development zone. Similar initiatives are planned for the northern and central regions, with a focus on providing high-quality education, healthcare, employment, and housing.
