The catheterisation laboratory at Addu Equatorial Hospital was officially reopened yesterday, marking the first time such a specialised facility has been established outside Male’.
The service has been launched in collaboration with Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital, the country’s main tertiary healthcare facility. The cath lab is being operated by a fully Maldivian medical team under the management of the Male’ City Hospitals Group.
The reopening is part of the government’s broader efforts to expand access to advanced healthcare services in regions beyond the capital. The initiative aims to reduce the need for patients in the southern atolls to travel to Male’ for specialised cardiac care.
A catheterisation laboratory is used for the diagnosis and treatment of heart conditions and supports procedures such as angiography, along with both invasive and non-invasive cardiovascular interventions.
The government awarded a five-year contract to manage and operate the Addu cath lab on June 12. The facility was initially developed during the previous Maldivian Democratic Party administration.
The first catheterisation laboratory in a government hospital was established at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital in 2016. Similar cardiac services are also available at ADK Hospital.
