A new 1.8-megawatt generator will be sent to Addu City next week in response to widespread criticism over frequent power disruptions affecting the city’s linked islands.

FENAKA Corporation stated that power supply issues were resolved after installing a 1.8-megawatt generator set on 21 February. However, Addu City Mayor Ali Nizar confirmed that outages continue to affect residents.

An official from FENAKA attributed the ongoing disruptions to inadequate planning over the past six years. The official stated that more efforts had been made in the past two months than at any other time to address the issue. As part of these efforts, the corporation is working to send another generator set to the city within the coming week.

FENAKA also noted that steps are being taken to enhance the performance of existing generator sets by improving ventilation at the powerhouse. However, the corporation highlighted that since some materials need to be imported, this process is expected to take approximately one month.

Meanwhile, Central Hithadhoo MP Ahmed Azan has requested to summon FENAKA officials before Parliament’s Committee on State-Owned Enterprises to address concerns over the power disruptions. In a letter to the Parliament Speaker, he alleged that the issue had persisted due to negligence from FENAKA.
