Adeeb’s Request to Extend Medical Treatment Period Granted

Former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb, currently serving a corruption sentence, has been granted additional time for medical treatment abroad, according to Maldives Correctional Service.

Adeeb departed for Singapore on the 11th of this month to seek treatment for life-threatening neurological disease. Initially, his authorised stay outside the Maldives was scheduled to end on the 22nd of this month.

The Maldives Correctional Service’s medical board granted permission for his travel to Singapore as certain medical tests essential for his condition could not be conducted in Maldives.

Adeeb’s legal representative filed a request for an extension last weekend, which was reviewed by the Corrections Medical Board. Consequently, the board has decided to extend the period of his medical treatment until August.

In 2020, the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) imposed a sentence of 20 years in jail and a fine of MVR two million on Adeeb after he pleaded guilty to the charges brought against him.
