Abdul Raheem Abdulla, Chairperson of the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC), attributed the party’s defeat to a lack of sufficient campaign effort, in the aftermath of yesterday’s mayoral election in Male’ City,

The victory went to Adam Azim, the candidate of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

Azima Shakoor, the closest contender, secured the second position with a margin of 2002 votes less than Azim’s count.

During a press conference held last night, Abdul Raheem acknowledged that the party’s focus on assuming responsibilities of the Executive branch and assembling the government’s members had diverted attention from the electoral campaign. He assured party members that lessons would be learned from this outcome, and efforts would be intensified to secure victories in future elections.

The PNC Chairperson admitted a lapse in communication with the general members of the party due to recent busyness, offering an apology for the oversight. He acknowledged that this lack of connection with the grassroots had also contributed to the election loss.

Dismissing claims that the defeat was a result of public dissatisfaction with government policies or the President, Abdul Raheem maintained a neutral stance on the reasons behind the loss.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu reached out to Adam Azim, extending congratulations on his win. Additionally, he expressed the government’s commitment to cooperating with the Male’ City Council and the newly elected Mayor.
