Agriculture Minister Rameela Resigns Citing Health Concerns

The Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, Dr Aishath Rameela, has stepped down from her position, citing health issues as the reason for her resignation.

The President’s Office confirmed her decision today, noting that Dr Rameela is undergoing treatment for advanced-stage cancer. She had previously sought medical care abroad for the condition.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu expressed his gratitude for Dr Rameela’s dedication during her tenure despite her health challenges. “It has been an honour to have such an active and dependable individual in the cabinet. I am confident she will continue to serve the Maldives in other capacities,” Muizzu stated.

He also extended his well wishes for her recovery, praising her strength and perseverance in the face of adversity.

Dr Rameela’s career in public service spans several decades. Prior to her appointment as Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, she served as the State Minister of Health. Her journey in public service began in 1990, working as a nurse.
